Bronze by C-A Calmels
Rare statue in silvered bronze by Celestin-Anatole Calmels (Paris 1822-Lisbonne 1906) representing “the castanet player”. The sculptor learnt his art from the master Jean-Jacques Pradier (1790-1852) and was one of the 8 artists, students of Pradier who created his tomb in le “Pere Lachaise” cemetery. Calmels has been granted with the 2nd grand prix de Rome in 1839. He spent most of his life in Lisbonne where he built different important monuments.The E. Benezit Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs lists Calmels on vol.2 page 466.
